ISSUE THIRTEEN 2007 WEDNESDAY APRIL 11TH 2007
On the Grapevine…
Greetings everyone,
I pray that your Easter celebrations were filled with the hope and joy of the Risen Saviour. I know that for many of you they would have been very busy so I hope that you have been able to have some time to rest and refresh this week. I encourage you to do that.
I had the privilege of being a worshiper and not a leader of worship this Easter.
It was a very meaningful experience to be led in worship by colleagues in Townsville.
Thank-
As well as other news and information, below is a rather long account of the Solomon Islands earthquake and tsunami as reported by the leaders of the church in the Solomons.
Pastoral Notes and prayer points:
• The people in the Solomon Islands and closer Pacific islands as they cope with the devastation caused by the earthquake and resulting tsunami.
• Those who are providing assistance and making strategic decisions regarding that assistance.
• Rejoice with us that our son who was in the Solomons with the Australian army has now concluded his deployment and has returned to Australia safe and well.
• Malcolm Bottrill has had a reaction to some medication and is on sick leave for 3 weeks.
• Phillip Hulme – a former minister at Atherton who had an operation last week for cancer and has to have further operations.
• Pray for Carole & Colin Young (Tully) – Carole’s Mum, Olga Ponsford, died last Friday in Perth. Her funeral was held on 4th April. Carol and Colin will be back home next week.
• Ian Wilson, former minister at Aitkenvale, has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. Please pray for him and Merlene. Ian had surgery last week. Pray also for Laumua Kofe as he provides supply ministry in Mackay.
Solomon Islands Earthquake & Tsunami:
The following is information on the state of play in the Solomon Islands from leaders in the UCSI (United Church in the Solomon Islands), particularly with regard to the United Church facilities.
Please remember the Appeal advertised last week.(see also below)
Tsunami Report from UCSI.
Introduction
For Christians, the week Tsunami attacked is holy Week and communities are preparing by way of morning and evening worship until Good Friday. But unfortunately this Natural disaster struck the entire Islands in the West at 7.40 am simultaneously – Earthquake followed by Tsunami. In response to various phone calls and emails from UCSI partner Churches, sending your prayers, thoughts, sympathy and offer of assistance this report is prepared to place you in context regarding the 2nd April earthquake and Tsunami.
Munda Experience
On Monday morning 2nd April, as usual I left my home at 7.05am for Kokeqolo walking about 25 minutes. I do this every day for work. I reached the office at 7.20am and Mr George Tuke was already there opening the office. As we talked we felt the quake increasing its strength. Fearing the office could fall, I ran outside. A little while we saw people walking towards the hills and enquired what happened. They responded the sea is coming. So we went out to see and saw the sea had already risen towards the office. Had it not been the islands and reefs Munda people would have no chance to escape and particularly for me in the office, I would have been caught unprepared. I told Mr Tuke that we closed the office and return to our families. I had to walk for another 20 minutes on the Munda airfield runway. As I walked I saw people from my next village already leaving their homes for the hills. The waves rose about two metres reaching the roads damaging wharves, removing canoes, fuel depot to the sea and putting debris to the road. Fortunately the islands and reefs placed by God in front of Munda naturally contained the waves hence when reaching the shores its velocity was radically reduced. Otherwise it could have caused damages beyond belief. People in Munda are still living in the bushes up hills.
Helena Goldie Hospital
The patients in the hospital are evacuated to the Church Kokeqolo High School as sea level rises. Fortunately the sea rise did not reach the actual Hospital infrastructure and faculties. But their OBM and other things at the beach shed were submerged in the sea. They lost equipments such OBM engines and tools. The Doctor will make a separate detail report on this.
Goldie College
Goldie College suffered unbelievable damages. Seven Students dormitories both girls and boys are now very unsafe to live in and students are currently living in classrooms. Twelve Staff houses including the sister house next to the girls dormitory are damaged either collapsed or their bricks are loosed and are unsafe to live in them. Staffs who are affected are now living in the dining hall. Science laboratory equipments are all destroyed, chemicals and apparatus. Seven classrooms are in urgent need of repair as their structures are broken and unsafe for students and teachers to use. Normal classes are now suspended until further the infrastructures are repaired and rebuild.
Simbo
A United Church Circuit is the hardest being attacked. Tapurai village is totally destroyed, while other villages are partially destroyed. Deaths reported earlier have increased. Today they have just found a
matured man, four other people are still missing at Simbo. Schools building at Tapurai have all collapsed. People in Simbo are living in the bushes up the hills.
Ranonga
Reports have yet to reach the office but some people died and school buildings are also destroyed.
Gizo
Gizo Township and villages around are damaged while some villages in the western end, Titiana and Paeloqe people’s houses are destroyed. Two Lives are claimed at Paeloqe and Gizo several, the number is yet to be finalised.
Vella
At Vella La Vella although Tsunami also reached Sambora a United Church Village and Vonunu shores. Today 4th April, a United Church village called Lambulambu is hit by Tsunami claiming one life already.
So Tsunami is still around.
Choiseul
Choiseul is hit by Tsunami as well and reports may have reached you from other reporters.
Reported by Rev Milton Talasasa, UCSI Assembly Office

GOLDIE COLLEGE
Dear Rev John Roberts and Sylvia,
Greetings from Munda. I talked with the Principal after conversing with Rev Roberts this afternoon. Goldie College sustains the following damages as a result of earth quake and Tsunami on 2nd April.
7 dormitories both girls and boys are unsafe to live in because their posts and foundations
are shaking when walking on the inside. 12 staff houses are unsafe now and staffs
are living in the dining hall while the students are living in the classrooms rooms
1-
Water and food needed for students Sisters house where Sylvia used to stay collapsed now sitting on the ground.
Classes are suspended indefinitely until repairs are done to the above buildings.
The staff met today and decided to suspend classes until further notices and help from the disaster council.
A full report coming next week says the Principal.
God Bless and Kind Regards, Rev Milton Talasasa, for Principal, Goldie College
ANOTHER EMAIL FROM MILTON TALASASA
Dear Sylvia Coombs,
Thanks for your email. The Moderator and GS are in Vella now for the funeral of the late Bishop Zapo. They will reply in detail upon returning from Vella. Just for your interest. Goldie College sustained many damages to teachers houses and other school properties. Most of us in Munda have spent two nights in the bushes behind the airfield. Things are settling down but still on red alert. Simbo and Gizo are badly affected wiping out houses at Paeloqe, Titiana and Bibolo villages including church buildings and schools. Villages at Simbo facing PNG are damaged beyond belief.
God Bless Leana Hola, Rev Milton Talasasa
EMAIL FROM DR DINA – CWM MISSIONARY, MEDICAL SUPERINTENDENT OF HELENA GOLDIE HOSPITAL
Dear Sylvia,
It's so comforting to know that we are surrounded by a large number of friends and God's wonderful people who care for us so much. The true extent of the damage caused by this tsunami disaster would be known only after days or weeks. The special ways in which the Lord has kept and protected us through this unfortunate event were amazing! The fact that the main earthquake and tsunami happened not at night time but at a time when everybody was alert and physically fresh ( just when we started morning devotion at 7:30); and also that this event was followed by a fine weather with bright full moon at night which enables people to spend the last 2 nights under open sky comfortably cool and dry, and the fact that no injury or casualty has been reported around Munda area in spite of extensive damage of roads, houses and individual properties. We acknowledged the goodness and kindness of God. However, we feel so sad for the damage and loss of lives else where, especially Gizo and surrounding areas. There are now 22 confirmed dead. The Ministry of Health is now planning to utilize HGH as the main base hospital for treating casualties within the province during the next few weeks, as Gizo Hospital is too extensively damaged.
I will try to let you know more details in the coming days.
Best wishes, Dina
Uniting Church Overseas Aid Staff Member flies to the Solomon Islands
Mr. Jeff Kite, Project Officer for UCOA, with extensive experience in both the Solomon
Islands and Papua New Guinea has flown to Honiara this morning (10th April).
Jeff will visit our partner, the United Church in the Solomon Islands, and assist
them in evaluating the needs of their communities. This evaluation will help determine
where relief is most urgently needed. Jeff will also develop a plan that will form
the basis of UCOA support as the rebuilding phase begins. This will include the most
effective ways for support to be sent so that it is used to assist those most in
need.
Email from Moderator of United Church in Solomon Islands to Bruce Mullan
Greetings,
It’s good to be back. Some of you will know my love for the Solomon Islands and the people of the United Church there. I have been devastated by the consequences of the recent earthquake and tsunami there and wanted to share with you an email I received from the Moderator of the United Church in Solomon Islands Rev. David B. Havea.
“I am very pleased to receive your email and thanks for your prayer for this difficult time of my people in Solomon Islands.
“The whole United Church are mourning for the lost of one of our great leader Late Bishop Rawlingson Zapo. He is one of the victims in the Tsunami while he was in Simbo for the induction of the new Supt. Minister.
“His wife Marama Zanice Zapo has been injured and she is still in the Federal Hospital at Honiara. She is slowly recovered. There are many of people died in Titiana, New Manda and Simbo. Some are still missing at the moment.
“I just visited Simbo, Titiana, Mew Manda and Nusa Baruku and Babanga. Most of the people of Simbo moved and settled on top of the mountain.
“The needs required are clothing, tents for shelters and food utensil. The Disaster Council and Red Cross are now distributed food and few tents. But most of the people of Gizo as Titiana and New Manda will be stayed up on the hill for a long time for theres no other houses left even the church build was destroyed.
“Goldie college is affected for there are many houses broken and dormitory. The school won't start until all this problems are fixed. Pray for the students and staff. The full report will be sent later
“Thank your very much for remembering us during this time of difficulty. May God Bless.”

National Presbytery Ministers Conference
Next week I will be in the Ballarat area attending the National Presbytery Ministers Conference which is held every 18months to 2 years. We have been warned to ‘dress very warm’. The last gathering organised by Queenslanders and held at Gympie was my first of these and I found it a very important networking time as well as being encouraging and inspirational. I am looking forward to the gathering but also looking forward to ‘thawing out’ when I come home.

Please note that the Synod Reports sent to Members of the 26th Synod are now available online on the Synod Website at http://www.ucaqld.com.au/26synod.php.
Leadership Training:
The weekend before Easter, Craig Mischewski and I had the responsibility of sharing the leadership of this years North Queensland Campus of Trinity College training event. The topic was leadership and there were up to twenty participants which was very pleasing. I know that Craig’s input on visioning and resourcing and recruiting leaders was well received. The participants seemed to appreciate my input as well. We hope and pray that is was useful in furthering the Kingdom of God.

Items for Prompts: It is great that others are sending information to be included in Presbytery Prompts. Please keep it up. It is really helpful if information arrives “print ready” to cut and past into Prompts. Time lines are such that Jane does not have the time to do a lot of editing of material sent. It is the responsibility of the person sending the information to have it ready. While I will still be monitoring the content and am happy to respond to any questions you may have regarding that, I will not be acting like an editor. Presbytery Prompts is YOUR communication tool as much as it is mine. Please be reminded that it is our policy to leave items in Prompts for 2 weeks. If you require information to be listed for longer please make that known or better still resend it when you want it included again.

NATIONAL DAY OF THANKSGIVING IS AN OPPORTUNITY NOT AN EVENT AND HERE IS WHY
The National Day of Thanksgiving (NDOT) is held each year on the Saturday of Pentecost
weekend which this year is Saturday 26th May. The week leading up to the National
Day of Thanksgiving however is as much part of the overall celebrations as what occurs
on the Day itself. This is how we envisage Churches using the week leading up to
the NDOT as the outreach opportunity to their community it represents.
Monday 21st May till Friday 25th May inclusive Churches are encouraged to hold morning
teas or other functions for those being thanked and honoured this year. For our
Senior Citizens, Indigenous People, and Volunteers who are the backbone of much of
the charity work undertaken in communities across the nation. At the morning teas
present those attending with certificates (available for downloading from our website
at www.thanksgiving.org.au on the Resources page under "2007 Printouts") "Thanksgiving
Day Cards" and/or "Thank You" ribbons (go to www.ausprayernet.org.au/thanksgiving.php
for ordering details).
Representatives of the Churches in each Community are encouraged
to seek permission to attend a regular meeting (the one closest to the NDOT) of the
respective Service Organisation in their community such as Rotary, Lions, Apex etc
to thank members on behalf of the Church and the Community for the work they do in
providing so many amenities for the community they serve.
For those wanting to pray,
join in the Week of Prayer for Church Unity being held in some Churches across the
country.
Saturday 26th May
Begin Thanksgiving Day with official breakfasts hosted by
the combined Churches of your area, but also attended (by invitation) by local civic,
business and community leaders to honour those in the categories mentioned above
or others from different spheres who have given outstanding service to the local
community during the past year. Perhaps organise such a function in conjunction
with your local Council.
Encourage members of your congregation, especially the Youth,
to, throughout the day, engage in random acts of kindness towards the especially
needy in your community.
Maybe organise a community festival outreaching to the whole
community. If you need assistance or ideas for this talk to Fusion Australia who
specialise in this outreach ministry.
At night come together as combined Churches
for a Pentecost Eve birthday celebration (its the Church's birthday) of worship,
thanksgiving and declaration of the word in what is known as "Australia Worships".
Sunday
27th May
The Sunday is a Global Day of Prayer so Churches are encouraged to pick that
up in their Pentecost Sunday services which may also be used as a time of Thanksgiving
for those who have gone the second mile in serving the Church during the previous
year.
As an added feature this year Intercessors are invited to join in with nations
across the globe in a 10 day season of prayer from Monday 28th May focusing on praying
in a mighty move of God in the nations of the earth. More details on that will be
given as they come to hand.

ATTENTION CONGREGATIONS WITH OWNED OR LEASED MOTOR VEHICLES
For some years now, Lumley General Insurance has provided the Church with our Motor Vehicle Insurance Policy. From Saturday, 31st March 2007, 4.00pm CGU Insurance will be our new Motor Vehicle Insurer. To lodge a claim, please contact CGU Insurance on their toll free number 1300 663 182. The most significant improvement to this process is that there is no requirement for the driver to fill in a claim form if the claim is lodged over the phone. The standard $500.00 excess still applies. It is imperative that any incidents which occurred before 4.00pm, 31st March 2007 are still lodged with Lumley General Insurance.

BOOK FOR PNG
I have a personal request from Samson Lowa, the Moderator of the United Church in Papua New Guinea for the book by Dick Eastman “The Hour that Changes the World”. He would like 20 copies to distribute to his Bishops. If anyone has a copy that they would like to donate (or have us purchase) please send them to me (29 Wentworth Ave. Mundingburra Q.4812) and I will arrange to send them to Papua New Guinea. If you prefer you could drop any copies to Ana at the Synod office and I will be able to collect them when next I am in Brisbane. Thank you on behalf of our sisters and brothers in PNG.

CODE OF ETHICS FOR LAY PREACHERS
A Code of Ethics for Lay Preachers was adopted at the March meeting of the Assembly Standing Committee. While the responsibilities of Lay Preachers are more limited than those of Ministers of the Word, Deacons, Youth Workers, Community Ministers, and Lay Pastors, it is important to recognise that they do have a degree of influence and power in the life of the church.
The National Lay Preachers Committee stated that the proposal for the new Code of Ethics was based on recognition that any influence and power arising form the exercised of the ministry of Lay Preachers brings with it certain responsibilities.
The Code of Ethics will address a range of issues within the polity and ethos of the Uniting Church, making Lay Preachers answerable to the Church through the Presbytery.
Lay Preachers have a particular place within the church community. They help people to encounter God in worship and to hear and respond to God’s word. The new Code of Ethics will offer guidance to Lay Preaches so that they may carry out their ministry in a professional and accountable manner.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER FOR ZIMBABWE
On Wednesday, 18 April 2007 has been declared an International Day of Prayer and

in Zimbabwe are dying from AIDS. Food is scarce. Medication is in short supply. The
inflation rate is at an outrageous 1200 percent. Medical workers are on strike. 80
percent of the population is unemployed. Humanitarian aid organizations are restricted

MINISTRY OF PASTOR UPDATE
The Implementation Task Group on the Specified Ministry of Pastor presented its first report to the recent Assembly Standing Committee. The ASC responded to the substantial report by addressing itself to a number of matters of policy and principle which will guide the ongoing work of the Task Group.
Some of the issues raised include the definition and scope of ministry, issues around appointment processes, and questions regarding in what situations pastors should be members of the councils of the church by virtue of the ministry that they exercise. A decision was made on what constitutes “continuous service” for persons currently serving in the specified ministries of Community Minister, Lay Pastor, and Youth Worker and the Assembly Legal Reference Committee has been asked to assist the Standing Committee with drafting the appropriate wording to achieve the outcomes sought by the ASC.
Certain issues brought to the committee were also referred to the Church Polity Reference Committee for its advice.

CHAPLAINCY IN SCHOOLS – WHO’S HAPPY?
Ever since the National Chaplaincy Programme in Schools was announced by the Prime
Minister and the Minister, Julie Bishop (Commonwealth Department of Education, Science
and Training – DEST), there has been quite a strong press and public reaction, which
has tended to vary from state to state. In Queensland, for example, chaplaincy in
schools has been growing at a rapid and accelerating rate over the past decade, particularly
in government schools. By contrast, in New South Wales, chaplaincy is virtually unheard
of outside of non-
Who’s happy about this? Probably the happiest people are the chaplaincy providers
in Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and Victoria, largely consisting

Some commentators on this issue may be surprised to learn that the programme looks set to favour government schools. Programme priority will be given to new or additional work; it cannot be accessed to fund current chaplaincy services. Nevertheless, the complete picture will not be clear until the number and type of successful applications is revealed over the coming months.
