FOURTEENTH EDITION 2007 WEDNESDAY APRIL 18TH

On the Grapevine…

Greetings everyone,

This week I am in Melbourne (Adekate Forest Lodge near Ballarat to be more precise) attending the National Presbytery Ministers Conference. I am writing this just before I leave so by the time you receive this I will be in a much cooler climate and sharing with colleagues from across the nation.

Many of those colleagues minister in Presbyteries that are different to North Queensland, theologically and sociologically as well as geographically. Key issues are different and they face challenges that are not challenges for us and visa versa. At the last gathering, which was my first, I really appreciated the time together and came to understand a little the different ministry contexts. We are a diverse nation and a diverse church. One thing that is abundantly clear though is that we worship the same Lord Jesus.

It is very important that we keep growing and opening ourselves to new ideas and different thinking. It is very tempting in the hustle and busy-ness of life and ministry to focus solely on the immediate and the local. Such events as this conference widen our horizons which is very important.

While one cannot always afford the time or finances to travel, one can always read. Can I encourage us all to read widely? The internet, for those who have access to it, is a wonderful source of diverse reading opportunities.

Keep open to those opportunities and keep open to God’s Spirit in the midst of those. His Spirit may well surprise you.

Pastoral Notes and prayer points:

The people in the Solomon Islands and closer Pacific islands as they cope with the devastation caused by the earthquake and resulting tsunami.

Those who are providing assistance and making strategic decisions regarding that assistance.

Rejoice with us that our son who was in the Solomons with the Australian army has now concluded his deployment and has returned to Australia safe and well and spent a few days last week with us.

Phillip Hulme – a former minister at Atherton who had an operation last week for cancer and has to have further operations.

Pray for Carole & Colin Young (Tully) – Carol and Colin will be back home on 24th April.

Ian Wilson, former minister at Aitkenvale, has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. Please pray for him and Merlene. Ian had surgery last week. Pray also for Laumua Kofe as he provides supply ministry in Mackay.

Malcolm Bottrill would like to sincerely thank the many members of Presbytery who have supported himself and Judy in prayer while he has worked through the debilitating effects of a drug allergy. Malcolm is now feeling much better and is back at work.

The Synod Report:

North Queensland has been allocated approximately 10 minutes to present our report at Synod in May. This is in addition to the report that is presented in the Report books that those of you who are Synod reps will have received. At our Presbytery leadership Team meeting recently, Garry Hardingham agreed to coordinate that report. He sends the following URGENT request. Please note it and follow it through.

REQUEST FOR SYNOD REPORT FROM GARRY HARDINGHAM

Garry wants at least 2 photographs from every congregation. Not just the parish, but from individual church buildings or gatherings. Even a bible study group with a small thing about how they relate to the theme of this Synod (Dare to Dream, Discover, Design and Deliver) also, if some would like to record a small audio grab as well (15-30 secs) that would help with the report.

I need this stuff really soon please.                                                                                    Rev Garry Hardingham

Solomon Islands Appeal

Dear Friends

The earthquake and subsequent tsunami that hit the western region of the Solomon Islands on 2nd of April has had a far more devastating effect than first thought. Our partner church, the United Church in the Solomon Islands (UCSI), reports significant damage to coastal communities including the tragic loss of lives.

Uniting Church Overseas Aid has established the Solomon Islands Emergency Appeal. We encourage members of the Uniting Church in Australia to give generously to assist our partners in this time of great need.

Tax deductible donations can be made by phone toll free 1800 998 122

Please make cheques payable to  Uniting Church Overseas Aid – Solomon Islands Appeal

They can be sent to PO Box A2266 Sydney South NSW 1235

Regular updates from the Solomon Islands can be found on our website http://uim.uca.org.au/uim/

Rob Floyd   (Deputy Associate Director)    Uniting Church Overseas Aid (UCOA)

Synod Reports available:

Please note that the Synod Reports sent to Members of the 26th Synod are now available online on the Synod Website at http://www.ucaqld.com.au/26synod.php.

Leadership Training:

The weekend before Easter, Craig Mischewski and I had the responsibility of sharing the leadership of this years North Queensland Campus of Trinity College training event. The topic was leadership and there were up to twenty participants which was very pleasing. I know that Craig’s input on visioning and resourcing and recruiting leaders was well received. The participants seemed to appreciate my input as well.  We hope and pray that is was useful in furthering the Kingdom of God.

Presbytery Bus Trip:

The proposed Presbytery Bus trip scheduled for the May long week-end will be postponed until later in the year. The smaller numbers of people available for a May trip meant that the trip was not viable this time. All money’s given as deposits will be refunded. Please look out for another date later for this trip of encouragement to the congregations in the west of our state.

Blessings to you all,

Bruce C.

Steve’s Stuff…

Greetings in the name of Christ!

On the evening of Maundy Thursday, thirty four people gathered at New Life Pastures Campsite, Kennedy for the start of Easter Camp 2007.  Young people and leaders from Mapoon down to Bowen had a great time over this significant weekend.  We give thanks to God for a fantastic camp.  It was exciting to hear young people asking each other whether they are coming to camp next year.  It is always a sign that they have had a great time!

Some of our activities included a scavenger hunt in groups in Cardwell, outdoor rock-climbing wall, jam session, footy and swimming.  The young people spent their free time just hanging out playing ping pong and a variety of board games.  They were a very inclusive bunch of young people to work with.  There was a very strong sense of community and ‘oneness’ over the weekend.

We had varying styles of worship from reflective to high energy.  Our band formed over the weekend and did a great job leading us in worship.  We were blessed to have such great musicians and singers.  I would like to say a special thank you to Tracie who pulled the worship together.

Our guest speaker Rob Hanks, explored the theme ‘Stories of Hope’.  Rob did this through direct input, story telling and using a variety of popular culture – music and movies.  The young people then had the opportunity to further explore the theme in their small groups.  Rob even wrote a song ‘Stories of Hope’ which we learnt over the weekend.

I would like to thank the leaders and other adults who made camp possible.  Without such dedicated people Easter Camp would not have been possible.  Thank you to the people across our Presbytery who prayed for us. I hope that your congregation can join us next year!

Yours in Christ’s service, Steve.

MINISTRY OF PASTOR UPDATE

The Implementation Task Group on the specified ministry of Pastor presented it’s first report to the Assembly Standing Committee. The ASC responded to the substantial report by addressing itself to a number of matters of policy and principle which will guide the ongoing work of the Task Group. Some of the issues raised include the definition and scope of ministry issues around appointment processes and questions regarding what situations Pastors should be members of the councils of the church by virtue of the ministry that they exercise. A decision was made on what constitutes "continuous service" for persons currently

serving in the specified ministries of Community Minister, Lay Pastor and Youth Worker and the Assembly Legal Reference Committee has been asked to assist the Standing Committee with drafting the appropriate wording to achieve the outcomes sought by the ASC. Certain issues brought to the committee were also Referred to the Church Polity Reference Committee for its advice.

TRANSITIONAL ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE NEW MINISTRY OF PASTOR

As part of the decision to move to a simplified  approach o non-ordained specified lay ministries the 11th Assembly resolved to close applications for the three existing non-ordained ministries of Community Minister, Lay Pastor, and Youth Worker. The Assembly recognised that there were people serving in these ministries who might want to explore a call to become ordained as Ministers of the Word or Deacons. A Task Group convened by Rev Dr Dean Drayton, considered the transitional arrangement that should apply to people who might take these steps. The Task Group on Transitional Arrangements for the reported to the March meeting of The Standing Committee has approved a full process that will guide applicants, presbyteries and synods on how to process applications from these three groups and how to most effectively support transitions from non-ordained ministry to ordained ministry. The minutes from the recent ASC are currently being prepared. Presbyteries and Synods will be advised directly and further information will be posted on the National Assembly web site as soon as possible.

NATIONAL IN-SERVICE FOR WORKERS WITH CHILDREN, YOUNG PEOPLE & FAMILIES

Every second year the Uniting Church holds a National In-service for workers with children, young people and families. This year’s In-Service will be held in Queensland on the Sunshine Coast at Alexandra Headlands and will be hosted by the Qld Synod Youth and Children’s Ministry Unit. The conference will run from 26 -31 August 2007 and is open to anyone who is training or works with Children, Young people or Families in a ministry setting.

This year’s In-service will challenge participants to explore theology, models and best practices in ministry with children, young people and families. This will be achieved in many different ways including input from our internationally respected guest speaker Professor Roland Martinson who will present his findings and tools into exemplary practices in these areas. A wide variety of Workshops for professional development will also be on offer including the opportunity to hear the latest information about the transition to the ministry of pastor or ordination. Registration forms are available from the Youth and Children’s Ministry Unit by emailing: HERE, ph: (07) 3377 9782 or going to the YACMU Website at www.yacmu.com.au.

CHAPLAINCY AND PASTORAL CARE IN-SERVICE

Rev Bob Harriman, the Lifeline chaplain for Queensland, will be speaking at and running a small in-service on chaplaincy and pastoral care at Emmanuel Uniting Church Cairns (Brown Street Westcourt) at 4.00 pm on Friday 4 May. ATTENTION CONGREGATIONS WITH OWNED OR LEASED MOTOR VEHICLES

For some years now, Lumley General Insurance has provided the Church with our Motor Vehicle Insurance Policy. From Saturday, 31st March 2007, 4.00pm CGU Insurance will be our new Motor Vehicle Insurer. To lodge a claim, please contact CGU Insurance on their toll free number 1300 663 182. The most significant improvement to this process is that there is no requirement for the driver to fill in a claim form if the claim is lodged over the phone. The standard $500.00 excess still applies. It is imperative that any incidents which occurred before 4.00pm, 31st March 2007 are still lodged with Lumley General Insurance.

CODE OF ETHICS FOR LAY PREACHERS

A Code of Ethics for Lay Preachers was adopted at the March meeting of the Assembly Standing Committee. While the responsibilities of Lay Preachers are more limited than those of Ministers of the Word, Deacons, Youth Workers, Community Ministers, and Lay Pastors, it is important to recognise that they do have a degree of influence and power in the life of the church.

The National Lay Preachers Committee stated that the proposal for the new Code of Ethics was based on recognition that any influence and power arising form the exercised of the ministry of Lay Preachers brings with it certain responsibilities.

The Code of Ethics will address a range of issues within the polity and ethos of the Uniting Church, making Lay Preachers answerable to the Church through the Presbytery.

Lay Preachers have a particular place within the church community. They help people to encounter God in worship and to hear and respond to God’s word. The new Code of Ethics will offer guidance to Lay Preaches so that they may carry out their ministry in a professional and accountable manner.

CHAPLAINCY IN SCHOOLS – WHO’S HAPPY?

Ever since the National Chaplaincy Programme in Schools was announced by the Prime Minister and the Minister, Julie Bishop (Commonwealth Department of Education, Science and Training – DEST), there has been quite a strong press and public reaction, which has tended to vary from state to state. In Queensland, for example, chaplaincy in schools has been growing at a rapid and accelerating rate over the past decade, particularly in government schools. By contrast, in New South Wales, chaplaincy is virtually unheard of outside of non-government schools.

Who’s happy about this? Probably the happiest people are the chaplaincy providers in Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and Victoria, largely consisting of church-connected groups. They are ready and willing to go, and have helped to shape the guidelines for the programme through representation on the DEST reference committee. However, even these groups recognise that the funding (up to $20,000 for each school accepted into the programme) may not be there after three years. At best it is a seed funding programme. Those who are not happy have deep reservations about Commonwealth government supervision (even if it’s partial) of a spiritually oriented ministry. In New South Wales, many church groups are also concerned that support for a chaplaincy programme will take the focus away from religious education teaching.

Some commentators on this issue may be surprised to learn that the programme looks set to favour government schools. Programme priority will be given to new or additional work; it cannot be accessed to fund current chaplaincy services. Nevertheless, the complete picture will not be clear until the number and type of successful applications is revealed over the coming months.

Would you like to share insight on this issue or learn more about it? Contact Mark Hillis (National Director, Christian Education) on 02 8267 4231 or markh@nat.uca.org.au

A briefing paper is available at http://assembly.uca.org.au/UE/documentsresources.htm Input and comments are welcome.
